thanks Will, didn't hear that about John Stewart, but then again, he's not an artist who's music i am overly familiar with; i did however this past weekend note the passing of Bobby Fischer, former Chess genius, and from what i understand he suffered from some serious delusions in his later years, however, one of my favourite reads as a kid was "Bobby Fischer Teaches Chess"; funny thing though, as good as i seemed to be when younger, i find today that even the most basic computer chess game can make me seem a novice to the game

Damn--always remembered him; he was the one with the big match in 72 with Boris, right? He defn seemed a bit of an oddball, but was really famous there for a while...

Here is a decent documentary on youtube on the 72 match between fisher and spassky. Outside of the chess: their personalities; the cold war aspects; and how the match proceeds are all pretty fascinating. I highly recommend it; I just re-watched it after his death and it is worth the time.

you are correct sir, he handily beat Boris Spassky in '72, and then again in a rematch in '92 in i believe the former Jugoslavia, for which he pissed off the gov't folks here in america due to some no-business embargo enacted by the UN

Spassky! Yes; didn't catch the fact that they had a rematch. That must have been something. Can still see the look of supreme concentration on BF's face on something like "Look" or "Life" back in 72...never was very good myself, but still loved the game.

Stewart was pretty good for a five yr period or so in the late 70s/early 80s, sort of "pop meets country rock" that was popular with many bars, including the band I used to roadie for, so I was exposed to it quite a bit. Then, when I saw him live, it surprised me how good of a show he put on. A little more polished than NRPS, but not as slick or sold out (IMHO) as most country folks of the day (just a bit of cynicism). Small venues in the AZ area made it nicer too...

The late Dick Schaap, of ESPN fame, befriended Bobby at a young age. He took Bobby to baseball games and was a father figure to Bobby.

In later years Schaap was quoted as saying, "I don't think Bobby Fischer has a sane bone in his body". Fischer never forgave Schaap and even went out of his way to insult Schaap's son Jeremy at a recent press conference. Jeremy is an accomplished reporter/interviewer and remained calm, but you could see the anger on both sides.

Oh yeah, and Bobby Fischer was live on Philippine Radio on 9/11 and was joyous to hear the news of the terrorist attacks. Bobby Fischer was a very good chess player....as a man, eh.
